I believe that good communication is important, especially in business. Language errors and poor translations can alter a document’s meaning or raise questions as to the credibility of the writer and the text as a whole. This can result in lost customers and diminished trust in your business.
I am driven by my love of language to ensure that my clients consistently receive the highest standard of translations and texts that are appropriate for the target audience. What inspires me about language is the constant strive for improvement as well as the creativity involved in the process of editing and translating. My passion has led me to start my own business: Kolibrie Vertalingen.
During my training to become a professional translator, I did a work placement with Qompas, an online publishing company with an international clientele. After my work placement I continued to work there as an editorial assistant. During my first year as a freelance translator I worked on a wide variety of texts, including marketing copy for Flying Blue, the frequent flyer programme of KLM and AIR FRANCE.
Translating marketing copy is challenging: you have to ensure that the message is creatively adapted and that it communicates effectively. You have to maintain the ‘feel’ of the original text by focusing on meaning, tone of voice and brand values, not actual words. I take into account all these considerations when adapting marketing copy to ensure it speaks to its target audience. Taking on such projects has greatly improved my writing skills and my ability to transcreate.
